The United States has urged the Myanmar government to secure a voluntary, safe, dignified, and sustainable return of Rohingyas and other refugees and internally-displaced persons.

The call was made by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale, who spoke with Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi on Tuesday and discussed the issue.

“Under Secretary Hale pressed the Burmese [Myanmar] government to end conflict across the country and secure the voluntary, safe, dignified, and sustainable return of Rohingya and other refugees and internally-displaced persons,”  said US State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus on Tuesday.

Under Secretary Hale also spoke with Burmese State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi to reaffirm American support for democratic reforms and humanitarian relief efforts in Burma and a credible, transparent, and inclusive national election in November, the spokesperson added.
