Train communication between Khulna and the rest of the country resumed on Tuesday noon, after a suspension of about ten hours.

The rail link was snapped following a collision between two freight trains at Sabdalpur station in Kotchandpur of Jhenaidah at 1.43am of Tuesday.

Three people including the train drivers — Raihan Hasan and Jewel Hossain — were injured in the accident. Following the incident, the railway authorities have suspended three employees-two drivers and a stationmaster.

Besides, a probe body was also formed to investigate the incident.

Kotchandpur Station Manager Golam Mostafa said the accident occurred when an oil-laden freight train from Parbatipur collided head-on with another goods-laden freight train from Jashore Noapara after disobeying signals at 1.43am.

Three bogies of the two trains derailed following the collision.

As a result, rail communications on Khulna-Dhaka, Khulna-Goalonda, Khulna-Rajshahi, Khulna-Saidpur, Khulna-Parbatipur and Khulna-Rangpur routes got snapped.

The rail communications was resumed around 12.00pm after a relief train from Ishwardi rushed to the spot and salvaged the trains.

Contacted, driver Raihan Hasan alleged Darshana Station did not send any signal for not entering the halt station.

However, Darshana Station Master Hafizur Rahman said the accident occurred because of a mistake of the train coming from Ishwardi.

“The track was clear for the train coming from Khulna, so it was not necessary to show signal the other way,” Hafizur said.

After the incident, the West Zone authorities suspended Raihan, Jewel and Hafizur.
