Ferry services on Shimulia-Kathalbari river route was halted as the Padma Bridge authority has requested the operators not to use the waterway.

The service came to a halt four hours after its resumption on Monday. Earlier, the ferry services remained suspended for 12 days.

Five ferries started carrying passengers on the route on Monday morning through the China Channel beside the 38th pillar of Padma Bridge.

“However, the ferry services came to a halt again at around 10am as the Padma Bridge authority asked us not to use the route,” Ahmed Ali, marine manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Shimulia ghat said.

As a result, hundreds of vehicles got stuck in tailbacks on both sides of the river route, causing immense sufferings for the passengers.
