Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Monday said that those who are involved in crimes would not be spared.

Indicating Erfan, son of Hazi Selim, the minister made the remarks while talking to reporters at his residence in Dhanmondi in the capital.

Erfan, also a local ward councilor of the Dhaka South city corporation, along with his associates assaulted a navy officer in the capital’s Dhanmondi area on Sunday.

"If anyone commits a crime, he will be punished. No matter who they are or whether they are public representative. Everyone has to face the law," the minister warned.

In his case statement, victim Lieutenant Wasif, an officer of Bangladesh Navy,

said a private car hit his motorcycle in Dhanmondi as he and his wife were going to Dhaka Cantonment from Nilkhet at around 7:45pm on Sunday. Some people came out of the car, verbally abused him and his wife and left the place. When the car stopped at a nearby signal, Lt Wasif knocked the window of the car and introduced himself as a naval officer. At this moment, the passengers got off the car again and attacked Wasif physically.

The on-duty police rescued Lt Wasif and detained the driver along with the car.

Later, Lt Wasif was sent to Dhaka Combined Military Hospital for treatment.
