No-confidence motion against UP chairman Manik in Lakshmipur

LAKSHMIPUR: A no-confidence motion against Bholakot Union Parishad Chairman Bashir Ahmed Manik of Ramganj upazila has been sent to Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives.

Ramganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Tapti Chakma sent the motion to the ministry on Thursday last (October 21) and asked to take further steps against alleged UP Chairman Manik.

UNO Tapti Chakma took this step after getting authenticity of the allegations were brought against UP Chairman Manik by the majority (10 out of 12) of the union parishad members.

On June 8 this year 10 members of Bholakot Union Parishad filed a complaint against UP chairman Manik’s corruptions and irregularities with Anti-Corruption office in Noakhali.

Later, on August 16 this year, they placed a no-confidence motion against Bholakot Union Parishad chairman Manik to the Ramganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO).

Following the no-confidence motion, current UNO Tapti Chakma formed a 2-member probe body to investigate the allegations.

On August 25, Upazila Education Officer Monzer Hossain and Upazila Rural Development Officer Himangshu Bonik investigated the matter in presence of UP secretary Saker Hossain and UP members and found authenticities of allegations against Bashir Ahmed Manik.

After finding various irregularities including financial scam, the investigation officers submitted the report to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer on August 28 recommending to take necessary action as per the rules.

Later, on October 20, the no-confidence motion was accepted unanimously at a special meeting of the Union Parishad in presence of Upazila Education Officer Monzer Hossain.

UP chairman Bashir collected Taka 11 lakh 28 thousand against trade licence fees from 12 brick kilns but deposited only Taka four lakh 43 thousand and three hundred to the government treasury. He also collected Taka 11 lakh 20 thousand against Number plates but did not deposit single Taka to the treasury.

Breaching the law, in the fiscal year 2020-21, UP Chairman Bashir formed 15 project committees under LGSP including him and two other UP members.
