Global corona toll reaches 1.145m

The novel coronavirus has killed at least 1.145 million people since the outbreak emerged in China last December till on Friday, report agencies.

At least 42,169,196 cases of coronavirus have been registered. Of these, at least 31,268,238 are now considered recovered. The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections. Many countries are testing only symptomatic or the most serious cases.

On Thursday, 6,472 new deaths and 479,310 new cases were recorded worldwide. Based on latest reports, the countries with the most new deaths were the United States with 1,035 new deaths, followed by India with 690 and Brazil with 497, reports AFP. The United States is the worst-affected country with 228,577 deaths from 8,675,170 cases. At least 5,662,993 people have been declared recovered, according to Worldometer.

After the US, the hardest-hit countries are Brazil with 155,962 deaths from 5,332,634 cases, India with 117,436 deaths from 7,772,649 cases, Mexico with 87,894 deaths from 874,171 cases, and the United Kingdom with 44,347 deaths from 810,467 cases.
