Academic year may be extended for six months as it was done in 1961

Currently, students, teachers, guardians and other stakeholders of ‘Education’ sector are all agog to know when the doors of all educational establishments will be opened and their premises will again become sonorous with the footfalls of the learners.

As the percentage of Covid-19 infected persons showing a downward trend, the educational institutions may be allowed to resume class-room teaching, cancelling all holidays and long vacation excluding weekly holidays henceforth and extending academic year for further six months from January’21 to June’21 to compensate the loss incurred.

In this context, it is worth mentioning that during the Presidentship of Military Jawta Ayub Khan, of the erstwhile Pakistan in 1961, academic year of 1960 was extended for further six months from January’61 to June’61 on the plea to adjust academic year with Fiscal year that begins on 1st July. If my memory does not betray, there was no public repercussion even not from any political party over the matter.

If class-room teaching resumes, for physical distancing of the students during imparting lessen, every class / section may be grouped into-two to three groups, each group not exceeding 25 to 30 students. And each period should not exceed 30 minutes except 35 minutes for 1st period; So that school and college management can run three shifts in their institution from 6:30 am to 5:30pm.

The shifts may be arranged as detailed here:

From 6:30 to 10:00 am, Morning shift,

From 10:00 am to 2:15 pm, day shift and

From 2:25 to 5:30 pm evening shift with 10 minutes recess in every shift. Since the range of day from December will be gradually longer. So, there will be no inconvenience in holding three shifts.

In running three shifts maximum class-load for a teacher will not exceed 8-9 periods whereas before locked down they would take at least six periods a day. For additional classes they may be favoured with some extra honourarium, subject to the availability of the fund. Within the Stipulated time to avoid anamolies in awarding scholarship among pupils of grade-5 and grade-8, tradational scholarship examination may be reintroduced only for this year to determine a parameter. S.S.C and H.S.C examination may commence on and from 1st July’21.

Henceforth, whatever measures have been taken to combat Covid-19 has been appreciated by the people, so it is assumed that public perception will not go against the steps.
