More FDI sought in leather sector

Speakers at a webinar on Tuesday emphasized on foreign direct investment in leather sector for improving the country’s leather technology and boosting exports.

They urged that if any country wants to shift its leather sector business in Bangladesh from China or any other country, they should be given some special benefits. 

 “If any global brand started their manufacturing factory in Bangladesh, local experts can earn experience to run global standard leather manufacturing factory from there. Otherwise, the sector’s booming will take much time.” The speaker said at webinar on ‘future of Bangladesh leather sector in the after of Covid-19.

Economic Reporters’ Forum organized the function. The Prime Minister’s adviser to private sector industry and investment Salman Fazlur Rahman, attended the webinar as the chief guest. Secretary, Ministry of Commerce Jafar Uddin was present at the function as special guest.

Two key notes were presented at the event on the topic by trade sector specialist and director of Policy Research Institute (PRI) Dr Mohammand Abdur Razzaque and professor of DU development studies Dr M Abu Eusuf.

Syed Nasim Manzur, Managing Director of Apex footwear Ltd, Mohiuddin Ahmed Mahin, president of Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters Association (BFLLFEA), Md Shaheen Ahmed, chairman, Bangladesh Tanners Association, spoke as panel discussants. 

Dr Abdur Razzaque mentioned in the key note paper that global trade including leather trade was in falling trend during the pandemic which affected leather sector of Bangladesh.

He suggested sharing experience with Vietnam to learn how the Southeast Asian country is running more than 14 Central Effluent Treatment Plants (CETP) that helped raise their leather sector annual export volume to $14 billion.

Dr Abdur Razzaque also asked for effective plan to run CETP or even handing over it to experienced foreign firm so that Bangladesh can achieve international standard in leather and leather goods.

ERF president Saiful Islam Dilal presided over the function while the secretary of the organization SM Rashidul Islam moderated the event.
