Three of the four accused, arrested so far on charge of gang raping a woman in a dormitory of Sylhet MC College on Friday, were put on remand on Monday.

Those who were placed on remand are the prime accused Saifur Rahman, Arjun Lasker and Rabiul Islam.

During the hearing on the remand, no lawyer appeared at the court on behalf of the accused, as the lawyers of the Sylhet decided not to defend the offenders for their involvement in such a heinous crime.

Of the four arrested, one was detained by the members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Sunday.

The arrestees are: prime accused Saifur Rahman, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Roni, Arjun Lasker, and Rabiul Islam.

Earlier, the victim’s husband filed cases against six identified persons and three unidentified persons.

A police official said the location of the four accused was identified by tracking the phone number of a leader of MC College Chhatra League.

Several teams from the law enforcing agencies are hunting for the remaining accused Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, Tarek Ahmed and three unidentified persons, said Jyotirmoy Sarker, additional deputy commissioner (media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP).

On Monday, RAB-9 arrested Md Ain uddin (26) and Rajan Mia (26) from Fenchuganj in Sylhet. Their names were not mentioned in the case.

Earlier on Sunday night, another RAB team arrested Shah Mahbubur Rahman Roni from Habiganj sadar00pm, said ASP Obain, media officer of RAB-9.

Meanwhile, a Sylhet court on Monday placed the three accused on remand when police produced them before the court.

Accused Saifur and Arjun Lasker were produced before Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate-2 Court at around 11:40am.

Magistrate Saifur Rahman of the court granted a five-day remand each for Saifur and Arjun after Indranil Bhattacharya, inspector of Shahporan Police Station and also the investigation officer of the case, produced them before the court with a seven-day remand prayer.

Later in the afternoon, another accused Rabiul Islam was brought in Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate-2 Court. Magistrate Saifur Rahman granted the five-day remand to the accused after the IO produced him with seven-day remand prayer.

In the court, the accused defended themselves as no lawyers came on their behalf.

During the hearing, several lawyers representing the state said the court wanted to know if the accused had any statements as they did not have a lawyer speaking on their behalf.

In response, Saifur Rahman pleaded his innocence. He told the court that Rajan, Ain Uddin and Tareq had committed the heinous crime, denying his involvement.

ATM Fayez Uddin, president of the Sylhet District Bar Association, said the crime committed by the accused was upsetting. Such an incident has never occurred in the history of Sylhet.

He said that the perpetrators have tarnished Sylhet’s image. So, Sylhet’s lawyers have decided not to defend the accused on moral ground.

A group of six or seven culprits dragged the woman into the dormitory and raped her after beating and tying up her husband when the couple went to visit the college at Tilagarh area on Friday night.

Later, victim’s husband filed a case with Shahporan Police Station early Saturday against the six accused.

The identified accused are Saifur Rahman, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Roni, Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, Arjun Lasker , Tarek Ahmed and Rabiul Islam .
