Navigability crisis was again disrupting ferry service on Shimulia-Kathalbari river route, causing long tailbacks on both sides of the river on Friday.

Md Shafiqul Islam, assistant general manager of Shimulia terminal under Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), confirmed the matter.

“Ferry service on Shimulia-Kathalbari route has been being disrupted for the last 28 days due to navigability crisis,” he said.

“On Friday, Shimulia terminal faced huge rush of transports like buses, trucks and cars, causing tailback at the ferry station. We are trying to resolve the problem by operating additional six ferries,” he said.

Cargo trucks were passing terrible time as those were carrying perishable goods.

The businessmen were worried that their perishable goods on the trucks will go rotten.

Ferry services on the route remained closed for 12 days this month. In remaining 13 days, only 400 trucks could avail the ferry service.
