UP chairman jailed for misappropriating govt rice

KUSHTIA: A union parishad chairman of Sadar upazila of the district was arrested and sent to jail along with his three associates for embezzling the government rice allocated for the poor and destitute.

The arrested is—Dabir Uddin Biswas, Chairman of Goswami Durgapur Union of Kushtia Sadar upazila and also the general secretary of the union unit of ruling Awami League.

The three others are— Maruful Islam, Councilor of Ward No. 1 of the same union, Montu Hossain, a rice dealer and Sarwar Hossain, president of the Ward No. 1 Awami League unit.

Judge Md Mohsin Hasan, Senior Judicial Magistrate 2nd Court of Kushtia, denied their bail plea and ordered to send them to jail on Thursday noon.

According to the case details, UP chairman and AL leader Dabir Uddin Biswas has been embezzling government rice allocated for the food assistance project of rice selling at Tk 10 per kg with the help of his associates.

They had been drawing rice of the project but did not distribute them to the listed beneficiaries.
