Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque said there is apprehension that a second wave of coronavirus infection will hit Bangladesh, as some countries are beginning to witness it.
The government is gearing up to handle such situation in case it arises, he said.The minister was addressing a programme marking the inauguration of modernization and better treatment service and academic extension project of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday.
Zahid Maleque said the government is working ceaselessly to get coronavirus vaccine on time.
“The government is maintaining contact with at least five companies which are in the final stage of coronavirus vaccine trial. We want perfect vaccine at the right time. We won’t be sitting idle if use of vaccine begins in any country of the world,” he said.
He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already given directives to complete all activities to get the coronavirus vaccine on time.
The minister deplored the fact that ordinary people are now showing a total disregard for adhering to health guidelines to curb the global respiratory disease.
Director of Dhaka Medical College Brigadier General AKM Nasir Uddin presided over the event while Director General of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Muhammad Khurshid Alom, Additional Secretary (hospital) of the ministry Muhibur Rahman, Director of DMCH Colonel Md Nazmul Haque and Additional Director General of Medical Education Division of the ministry Yusuf Fakir spoke on the occasion.
