Beeswax production rises in Sundarbans

KHULNA: The collection of honey and production of beeswax in the Sundarbans has increased this year as there was a ban on visitors due to coronavirus outbreak.

According to the Forest Department, traditional honey collectors, known as Mawali, collected a total of 1,22,000 kgs of wild honey from the Sundarbans East Zone in 2019-20 fiscal year. The quantity was 7,4200 kgs in 2018-19 while 68800 kgs in 2017-18.

Increasing of honey collection has also influenced on revenue collection from this year. A total of Tk 10,00,000 has been collected from honey collection this year while it was Tk 5,50,900 in 2018-19 and Tk 3,90,800 in 2017-18.

Besides the honey collection, production of beeswax has also increased. A total of 36600 kgs of beeswax has produced in Sundarbans East Zone, bringing Tk 366150 revenue this year.

The production was 22900 kgs in 2018-19 and the revenue collection from this sector Tk 230600 while the production was 15800 in 2017-18 and the revenue collection Tk 155553.

Regarding the matter, Divisional Forest Officer of Sundarbans East Zone Mohammad Belayet Hossain said the forest department issued a red alert on March 26 banning entrance of all fishermen, Bawalis as well as visitors.
