8 suspended Titas staffers arrested

Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police has arrested eight suspended officials and employees of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd (TGTDCL) in a case filed over the Narayanganj mosque explosion that left 33 people dead.

They were detained from Narayanganj and Dhaka on Saturday, said Mainul Hasan, deputy inspector general (DIG) of CID’s Dhaka Range, during a press briefing held at Narayanganj CID headquarters.

The arrested persons include Sirajul Islam, manager for Fatullah Zone, 42, Mahmudur Rahman Rabbi, 34, deputy manager, Manik Mia, 33, engineer, and SM Hasan Shahriar, 32, assistant engineer.

The other arrestees are senior supervisor Monibur Rahman Chowdhury, 56, senior developer Md Ayub Ali, 58, and assistants Hanif Mia, 48, and Ismail Prodhan, 49. Titas authorities suspended them on charge of negligence of duty over the mosque explosion.

Speaking at a press conference, DIG Mainul Hasan said, “Based on evidence and information from witnesses, we have detained the eight officials and employees of Titas, who were earlier suspended over negligence in connection with the Narayanganj mosque blast incident.”

"During investigation, we will arrest all the persons against whom evidence can be found in connection with the incident,” the DIG added.

They will be sent to court for a five-day remand showing their arrest in the case filed in connection with the blast, he added.

The police official said, “The investigation of the case has progressed. The negligence of Titas officials has come under investigation. If the mosque committee is found to be negligent, they will also be brought under the law. The matter is still under investigation.”
