The Professional Football League Committee (PFLC) of Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) approved the four foreign players’ quota for the upcoming season 2020-21 as most of the participating clubs demanded it. The committee also announced the first week of December as the expected date for season’s curtain-raiser soccer meet Federation Cup.

BFF Senior Vice-President and PFLC Chairman Abdus Salam Murshedy, MP disclosed the details to media after the meeting held at the BFF house in Motijheel on Thursday.

“We have made several important decisions for the upcoming season 2020-21. Most of the participating clubs agreed to keep four foreign players for the upcoming season 2020-21. We’ve also decided to start the new season with curtain-raiser soccer meet Federation Cup from the first week in December. These decisions were made on basis of the clubs’ response to our letter,” Murshedy said.

The PFLC committee also made decisions on local players and their contracts with clubs. The clubs can retain their local players, but they have to pay all arrears of season 2019-20. Besides, they can make 75 percent wage reductions in the contract for next season. Ahead of the starting the new season, the clubs were requested to pay at least 41% to 45% of arrears to their respective players.

“Most of the clubs have been facing financial crisis due to the pandemic. We earlier proposed them to pay all arrears of 2019-20 and 50 percent wage reduction in the contract for next season. The percentage was confirmed after the meeting with players. But they agreed to pay only 25 percent. Apart from these, they were agreed to retain their respective local players,” the PFLC chairman added.

The committee decided to open the player registration window for the season 2020-21 before December. They also decided to shorten the schedule and reduce the number of venues to 3 or 4.

Murshedy informed that they would send the decisions to the BFF Executive Committee for final approval after October 3.

Earlier, Holders Bashundhara Kings and seven other clubs -- Sheikh Russel KC, Sheikh Jamal DC Ltd, Arambagh KS, Muktijoddha SKC, Rahmatganj MFS, Brothers Union Ltd and Bangladesh Police FC -- demanded foreign players. Two clubs Saif SC and Uttar Baridhara SC wanted to play without foreign players, but BPL runners-up Dhaka Abahani Ltd, Dhaka Mohammedan SC Ltd and Ctg Abahani Ltd didn’t reply to the letters.
