76kg Bomb Planting in Gopalganj

HC starts hearing death reference

The High Court started hearing on the death reference of the case over planting bomb to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Gopalganj in 2000.

A division bench comprising Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim and Justice Md Badruzzaman partially heard the matter on Wednesday.

Deputy Attorney General Dr Md Bashir Ullah read out the verdict of the trial court.

Police recovered the 76kg bomb from Sheikh Lutfor Rahman Ideal College of Kotalipara in Gopalganj on July 21, 2000, a day before Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was scheduled to address a rally there.

Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 in Dhaka on August 20, 2017 sentenced 10 leaders and activists of Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (Huji) to death in the case.

They death row convicts are Wasim Akter alias Tarek, Rashed alias Abul Kalam, Yusuf Alias Moshab Morol, Sheikh Farid alias Maulana Shawkat Osman, Hafez Zahangir Alam Badar, Maulana Abu Bakar alias Hafez Selim Howlader, Hafez Maulana Yahia, Mufti Shafiqur Rahman, Mufti Abdul Hye and Maulana Abdur Rauf alias Abdur Razzaque.

The court awarded life imprisonment to Mehedi Hasan alias Abdur Wadud and 14 years imprisonment to Anisul Islam alias Anis, Mohibullah alias Mofizur Rahman and Sarwar Hossain Mia.

Huji leader Mufti Hannan was found guilty but was acquitted as he was executed on April 12, 2017 in a case for killing three people and injuring then British high commissioner to Bangladesh Anwar Choudhury in Sylhet in 2004.
