3 of family burnt alive in Ctg fire

CHATTOGRAM: Three of a family, including a physically challenged elderly person, were burnt alive in a fire at a slum in the city’s AK Khan Gate area on Friday night.

Several others also received injuries in the incident.

The deceased were identified as Abu Taher, 60, his wife Ayesha Begum, 50, and their one and half years old grandson Rashed.

Sources said the fire broke out from kitchen burner at a house of the slum adjoining to Azam Nagar under the Pahartali police station at night.

Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) department Chattogram Deputy Assistant Director (DAD) Farid Ahmed Chowdhury said being informed, ten fire fighting units from different fire stations rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after several hours of frantic efforts. Physically challenged Taher, her wife and grandson were burnt to death and several others injured in the fire, he said.  The fire also burned down some 30 slum houses of different owners, said the DAD.

Extent of damage by the fire would be ascertained after proper investigation, he said.

The injured persons were rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment, said sources concerned.
