Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque said the government will take a decision about purchasing the coronavirus vaccine next week.

“We will decide whether China will be allowed to conduct vaccine trial in Bangladesh,” he said.

The Health Minister disclosed the information while speaking at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase on Wednesday.

Zahid Maleque said many countries are signing agreements with Oxford University and paying in advance so that they can get the shots if the vaccine pans out.

Other biotechnology companies including Moderna of the United States which are conducting research on the Covid-19 vaccine are also making deals with various countries.

“The companies will first provide vaccines for those countries that inked deals in advance. We are also continuing negotiations with them,” said the health minister.

Maleque said the World Health Organization (WHO) is also continuing discussions with biotech companies so that three percent of people worldwide, who are more susceptible to the virus, can be provided with the vaccine.
