NEW DELHI: India has logged 60,963 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours with 834 deaths, the Union Health Ministry said on Wednesday morning. The total number of cases in the country has now shot up to 23,29,638 with 46,091 deaths, reports NDTV.

A total of 16,39,599 COVID-19 patients have recovered from the infection, taking the recovery rate to 70.37 per cent, the ministry said on Wednesday.

The country’s COVID-19 mortality rate dropped below 2 per cent for the first time since the first lockdown, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday evening. The announcement came after a virtual conference between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief ministers of 10 of the worst affected states.

India’s mortality rate has fallen to 1.99 per cent, the health ministry said on Tuesday morning.

According to the ICMR, a cumulative total of 2,60,15,297 samples have been tested up to August 11 with 7,33,449 samples being tested on Tuesday.

The health ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities.

“Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research,” the ministry said, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation.
