Bangladesh have been placed in Division 2 Pool A of Chess Olympiad 2020 along with nine other nations namely Philippines, Indonesia, Germany, Belarus, Belgium, Australia, Turkmenistan, Bulgaria and Kyrgyzstan.

The matches of round robin league basis Pool A will be held on August 14 to August 16 at 02:00pm (BST), said Bangladesh Chess Federation (BCF) in a press release on Tuesday.  Earlier, BCF announced a seven-member main team and a seven-member reserve team for the online Olympiad, organized by International Chess Federation (FIDE), in their last executive committee meeting on July.

The federation has decided to give GMs Tk 30,000, IMs Tk 25,000 and others Tk 20,000 as participation money.

The online Olympiad is a national team event in which all federations affiliated to FIDE have the right to participate. Each team will consist of six players with a minimum quota of three female players and two junior players.

The teams may have up to six reserves and a team captain. The time control for the event will be 15 minutes and 5 seconds increment per move. The event will comprise two main stages: divisions stage and play-offs stage, from the Round of 16 to the final. In the division stage, all the teams’ participants will be divided into 5 divisions ranked from ‘Base Division’ to ‘Top Division’. Twelve teams qualified from Stage 1 will play a knock-out tournament. Each duel will consist of two matches, alternating on the basis of which team has white on the first board.

Meanwhile, the 44th Chess Olympiad, which was scheduled to be held in Russia on August 5 to August 17 August this year, was postponed until the summer of 2021 at the same location due to pandemic outbreak.
