The Election Commission (EC) will change the names of local government bodies from English to Bangla after reforming the existing laws.

The commission has put forward the proposal at a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Monday.

The EC have proposed “Local Government Institution Election Act-2020” in which it also suggested changing the names of posts held by public representatives in these organizations, said a source of the EC.

A combined law will also be introduced after compiling all laws of the local government election, source added.

The use of irrelevant English names and words was discovered during the efforts to reform the election-related laws of local government bodies, according to the proposal. An initiative has been taken to replace the unnecessary and foreign names and words with Bangla terminology.

For example, City Corporation will be renamed Mahanagar, Pouroshabha will be Nagarshabha and Union Parishad will be Polli Parishad.

The law will be sent to the local government ministry after receiving opinions from all political parties.
