Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader Sunday said that political identity could not be a shield for wrongdoers.

“Stern action against wrongdoers is being taken as the government can read people’s mind,” he said.

Quader, also the Awami League general secretary, made the statements at a virtual view-exchange meeting with Gopalganj zone of road, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority and Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation officials from his official residence in the capital.

The minister reiterated that government has taken a tough line on irregularities and corruption. The government determines to bring everyone responsible for any criminal activities to justice, he said.

There is no way a culprit can get off scot-free and no-one can escape punishment using the influence of the party, he added.Referring to the drive against casinos and irregularities in health sector, Quader said the government never wanted to hide the information. Rather it has spontaneously carried out the raids against such irregularities, he added.

“What action did the Bangladesh Nationalist Party take against irregularities and corruption during their rule? But they became world champion in corruption,” he said.“BNP has recognized itself as a self-acknowledged corrupt political party by scrapping an article relating to corruption from their party charter,” he added.

Those who have been accused in incidents like murder of Abrar of BUET, Rifat Sharif of Barguna and Nusrat of Feni have been brought to book, he said, asking BNP whether they had set any example like these during their rules.
