New gas from Srikail East likely by December

The government expects to add virgin gas into national grid from newly discovered marginal gas field Srikail East by November or December this year.

Energy and Mineral Resources Division Senior Secretary Md Anisur Rahman disclosed it at a virtual seminar on the occasion of National Energy Security Day'20 on Sunday.

“We hope that we will be able to add another 10mmcfd (million cubic feet of gas per day) into the national grid within November or December from Srikail East,” Anisur Rahman said.

He said the newly discovered field has a total 71 billion cubic feet (BCF) of gas reserve of which 51bcf is recoverable.

“As per the calculation, if 10 mmcfd on average can be produced from the well-1 at Srikail East. Then it will meet the country’s gas demand for the next 14 years.”

The gas structure was discovered last March at Muradnagar in Cumilla.

Previously discovered Srikail gas field in 2012, however, produced 35mmcfd natural gas, which was also close to the present location.

The energy secretary said the state-owned Bapex will also drill new prospect at Shariatpur as the structure is as same as that of Bhola fields where Russian Gazprom drilled series of wells.

The government has also a plan to conduct 3000km (2D) seismic survey in greater Chattogram to explore oil and gas in Sitakunda, Chittagong hill districts and Cox’s Bazar, according to him.

“Currently, we are producing 2500mmcfd-2550mmcfd natural gas in local gas fields whereas the demand is more or less 3250 mmcfd,” the official said.

The rest of the demand will be met through LNG import, according to him.

“We are importing LNG under two separate spot contracts. Of them, we are planning to bring seven cargos by December and another 14 cargos within June, 2021,” he said.

The government is taking all the alternatives to make the country’s energy security,” he said.
