The nation will observe the 90th birth anniversary of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, wife of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, today.

Fazilatunnesa, who played a pivotal role in nation-building activities and the struggle for independent Bangladesh staying beside Bangabandhu, was born at village Tungipara of Gopalganj district on this day in 1930. Bangamata, a pride of the Bangalee nation, was brutally assassinated along with Bangabandhu and most of her family members by a group of disgruntled army officers on August 15, 1975.

The Women and Children Affairs Ministry has taken elaborate programmes to observe Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib’s birth anniversary across the country.

 The theme of the day this year is ‘Bangamata is the courageous symbol of sacrifice and beauty.”

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will attend as the chief guest a virtual programme from her official residence Ganabhaban to mark the birth anniversary of Fazilatunnesa Mujib.

Awami League presidium member Matia Chowdhury will read out the keynote paper at the programme.

State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Fazilatun Nessa Indira will chair the Bangamata’s birth anniversary programme at Bangladesh Shishu Academy auditorium.

The ministry will distribute sewing machines and money through mobile banking service to the distressed women who have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Under the programme, some 3,200 sewing machines and Tk 2,000 each will be given among 1,300 distressed women as per the enrolment of the beneficiaries provided by deputy commissioners of 64 districts.

At the same time, 100 laptops will be given to the poor meritorious students in Goplaganj district.

The financial grant will be transferred to the mobile numbers of the beneficiaries by the Prime Minister through the electronic system.

On behalf of the prime minister, the Deputy Commissioner of Gopalganj will hand over the sewing machines and laptops to the beneficiaries.

To mark the day, different organisations of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs will hold discussions in coordination with all the district administration.

Besides, live documentaries will be screened and souvenir will be published on the glorious life of Bangamata.

Bangladesh Television (BTV), Bangladesh Betar and other electronic media will broadcast special programme on the occasion of Bangamata’s birth anniversary.

Different social and cultural organisations, including ruling Awami League, have taken various programmes on the occasion.

The programmes taken by the Awami League, include recitation of holy Quran,  milad and holding of doa mahfil. The party will pay tribute to Shahid Fazilatunnesa by placing wreaths at her grave at Banani at 10:00am.

Awami League and two Dhaka city units of the party will participate in the programme.

Bangladesh Krishak League will organise a discussion and doa mahfil at AL central office on Bangabandhu Avenue at 12:00pm today.

Information Minister and Awami League joint general secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud will attend the programme as the chief guest.

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader urged all leaders and activists of the ruling party and its associate bodies to observe Bangamata’s birth anniversary in a befitting manner.
