Khaleda’s family may seek permission for her treatment aboard

Family members of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia are planning to apply to the government seeking permission for her treatment aboard.

“It is political and family matter whether she needs to be taken abroad for treatment,” BNP law affairs secretary Barrister Kaiser Kamal, also one of the counsels of Khaleda Zia, told the daily sun on Thursday.

Currently, BNP chairperson has been staying at her Gulshan residence and receiving treatment since she had received a six-month conditional release on an executive order. Her release period is going to end in less than two months.

However, there were conditions that Khaleda Zia would stay at home and receive treatment there during her release period.

“If she wants extension of her release, Khaleda Zia has to apply to the government for it. If the government doesn’t extend her release, she has to return to jail,” Mosharraf Hossain Kazol, the lawyer for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) told the daily sun.

The family members will simultaneously apply seeking extension of her release and permission for taking her aboard for treatment, the party insiders said.

Khaleda Zia’s family, her physicians and some of the party senior leaders think that she should be taken abroad to receive better treatment there.

Earlier, the BNP chief received her eye treatment in UK and knee treatment in USA.

On 25 March 2020, the government freed Khaleda Zia for six months on an executive order. She has been in jail since 8 February 2018 on charges of corruption.

Talking to reporters, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir recently said “Her health problems persist and she isn’t being given the opportunity for medical treatment. She cannot go to the local hospitals.”
