27 killed in road accidents on Eid holiday

At least 27 people have been killed and scores of others received injuries in separate traffic accidents throughout the country during the Eid holidays.

On Tuesday, at least five people were killed in three separate road crashes in Habiganj, Rajbari and Cumilla. 

In Habiganj, two people were killed and 10 others were hurt when a passenger bus rammed into another one in Shaistaganj Golchattar area on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway around 11:00 am.

The identities of the victims could not be known immediately. The injured were taken to different local hospitals.

Shaistaganj Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Toufiqul Islam Towfiq said: “According to eyewitnesses, a Sylhet-bound bus of Adnan & Arida Paribahan from Cumilla hit another Sylhet-bound bus of Raja & Sons Paribahan from Dhaka, leaving a helper of the bus driver and a pedestrian dead on the spot and 10 others injured.”

On receiving information, police reached the spot, rescued the injured and sent them to hospitals.

In Rajbari, a motorcyclist and a pillion passenger were killed when a truck ploughed into them in Sonapur intersection area under Kalukhali Upazila around 7:00 am. The deceased are named as Abdullah Abu Sayed, 22, son of Abu Farhad of Mathurapur village under Daulatpur Police Station in Kushtia, and Shimul, 25, son of Hamidul from the same area.

In Cumilla, a pedestrian was killed when a bus overturned in Amirabad area on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway under Daudkandi upazila in the morning.

The victim is identified as Shohag Bhuiyan, 32, confirmed Daudkandi Highway Police Station OC Sarkar Abdullah Al Mamun.

A bus of Lal Shabuj Paribahan crashed into a median strip in the area and flipped over, killing one pedestrian on the spot and injuring another, OC Sarkar said.

On Monday, a head-on collision between a bus and a pickup left three people dead in Bathuli area on Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Dhamrai Upazila of Dhaka district.

One of the deceased is identified as Anwar Hossain, 26, a passenger of the pickup while identities of others, including the pickup driver, could not be known immediately.

In Chapainawabganj, primary schoolteacher Golam Sarwar Kawnain, 60, was killed in the central bus terminal area.

On Sunday, at least seven people including three members of a family were killed in Nilphamari, Chapainawabganj and Dhaka’s Dhamrai.

Besides on Friday, eleven people, including four members of a family, were killed and 10 others injured in road crashes in Sylhet, Habiganj and Gaibandha.
