‘Master plan taken to rescue water bodies’

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on Monday said the government has taken a master plan to rescue the rivers and canals in and around Dhaka city.

“Once the master plan is implemented, water vessels can be able to ply the city canals,” he said while visiting evacuation works on the banks of Buriganga and Turag.

Later, he inaugurated a tree plantation programme near Birulia Bridge.

“The aim of the prime minister is to restore natural water flow of canals and rivers,” he added.

The junior minister said Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, Ministry of Shipping, Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Environment and related city corporations will work jointly to implement the plan.

Additional Secretary of Shipping Ministry Anol Chandra Dash and BIWTA Chairman Commodore Golam Mohammad Sadeq were also present.
