Asian Seniors Online Chess kicks off

Niaz, Rani to play on July 18

Asian Seniors Online Chess Championships 2020 (rapid chess) for over-50 and over-65 age groups, organised by Asian Chess Federation, kicks off today. Bangladesh Grand Master Niaz Murshed and Woman International Master (WIM) Rani Hamid will take part in Zone 3.2 on July 18.

Fide Master Md Saif Uddin, Women Fide Master Zakia Sultana, Rafiqul Islam, Assaduzzaman, Sirajul Islam, Mohsin Jamal and Ali Kawsar will also compete, said International Arbiter of Bangladesh Chess Federation (BCF) Md Haroon or Rashid.

“A total of 40 chess players from six countries including Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will compete in the one-day Zone 3.2 competition on July 18,” Haroon, who is also the Deputy Chief Arbiter Of The Competition, told daily sun on Sunday.

This year, a total of 52 Asian nations, split into seven zones, will take part in the competition.  Zonal tournaments will be held on the 7-round Swiss System while the final will be held on the 9-round Swiss System.

Top three male and female chess players from each zone will qualify for finals. The finals of over-65 age group will be held on July 20 and finals of over-50 age group will be held on July 21. Top three of each category will get Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for the zonals and finals.

BCF General Secretary Syed Shahab Uddin Shamim said, “We expect good results from Bangladesh team especially from Niaz Murshed and Rani Hamid.”
