World Population Day observed

The World Population Day-2020 was observed in the country as elsewhere in the world on Saturday.

The theme of the day for this year is “We prevent Covid-19 pandemic, safeguarding the health and rights of women and girls.”

In observance of the day, Department of Population Science of Dhaka University and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) jointly organised a webinar.

State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Fazilatun Nessa Indira attended the programme as the chief guest while DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman presided over the event. Dean of Faculty of Arts and Humanities of DU Professor Dr Sadeka Halim and UNFPA Country Representative Dr Asa Torkelsson also took part in the programme as special guests.

Among others, lawmakers, senior policy experts and government officials, educationists, representatives of civil society and development partners also joined the webinar. In her speech, Fazilatun Nessa Indira emphasised on the importance of preferring human rights to protect the women and girls during the pandemic.

DU VC Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman stated that the women and girls are struggling more due to the economic and social uncertainty caused by Covid-19. He urged all to take combined steps to protect them.
