Serajul Karim, father of Regent Hospital Chairman Mohammad Shahed who is wanted in a fake COVID-19 test report scam case, died from coronavirus infection on Thursday night.

Sirajul Karim was undergoing treatment at Universal Medical College Hospital in the capital. He breathed his last at 9:15pm in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Managing Director Dr Ashis Kumar Chakrabarty said Shahed admitted his father on July 4. His father’s test came positive at the hospital. But before that, he was tested negative for Covid-19 thrice.

“I asked Shahed to take his father to his hospital, as it was a Covid-19 dedicated one; in reply he said that his hospital did not have the required service,” Dr Ashish said.

“Shahed even inquired about his father’s health on the same night RAB raided his hospital. But since then, his phone has been switched off,” he said.

“We were not able to contact Shahed to let him know about his father’s demise. His wife is a news anchor at BTV, one of her colleagues was informed about the matter. But no relatives showed up except the two nominees who took the body away,” he said

Earlier, the hospital authorities filed a general diary (GD) with Tejgaon Police Station as Sirajul was alone in the hospital when his condition was critical. To avoid problems, the hospital authorities filed the GD.

Shahed is currently wanted in a case filed by RAB with Uttara West police station.

On Wednesday, a RAB team raided two branches of Regent Hospital in Dhaka and found around 6,000 fake Covid-19 reports, which had been sent out without conducting any tests.
