PARIS: The novel coronavirus has killed at least 558,382 people on Friday since the outbreak emerged in China last December.

At least 12,432,307 cases of coronavirus have been registered in 196 countries and territories. Of these, at least 7,252,605 are now considered recovered.

The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections.

Many countries are testing only symptomatic or the most serious cases.

The United States is the worst-hit country with 135,869 deaths from 3,222,123 cases. At least 1,426,613 people have been declared recovered.

After the US, the hardest-hit countries are Brazil with 69,184 deaths from 1,755,779 cases, United Kingdom with 44,602 deaths from 287,621 cases, Italy with 34,926 deaths from 242,363 cases, and Mexico with 33,526 deaths from 282,283 cases.

China — excluding Hong Kong and Macau — has to date declared 83,585 cases (4 new since Thursday), including 4,634 deaths and 78,609 recoveries.
