State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russell said that they will take the decision about resuming sporting activities and practice sessions after consultation with Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

He made the announcement after a meeting with representatives from all the sports federations of the country at the conference room of National Sports Council (NSC) on Thursday.

“We want to resume those games first which don’t feature body contact. But we’ll make the final decision according to the opinion of the health ministry. We will talk with the Health Ministry next week. We will give the highest priority to the health and safety of our athletes,” he said to the media.

Secretary for Youth and Sports Aktar Hossain, Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) Secretary General Syed Shahed Reza, General Secretaries of volleyball, handball, archery, shooting, karate, weightlifting and others were present there. The ministry also told the federations to submit their plans for resuming sports and training with the health measures they intend to take to keep corona at bay.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports suspended all international and domestic sporting events of the country on March 16 as government banned all public gatherings to curb the spread of coronavirus.

After the decision, all sporting federations including Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) froze their respective events.

Meanwhile, the sports federations opened their offices after a 70-day-break on June 1 as the government eased lockdown and allowed all offices and businesses to resume operations on a limited scale from May 31 to June 15.
