Bank account opening eased

Coronavirus affected families, who are entitled to get government’s cash incentive, can open a bank account only at Tk 10 as the country’s central bank issued a circular in this regard on July 6, 2020.

The government has already declared cash incentives for 5 million families, who became victim of COVID-19, marking Mujib Barsho.

Beneficiaries who do not have mobile phones or it is not possible for whom to open a mobile financial service account, can only open a bank account with a deposit of Tk 10 on the basis of national identity card (NID) or smart card information or certification by Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNO).

Bangladesh Bank issued a circular in this regard signed by Anwarul Islam, General Manager and sent to the managing directors and chief executive officers of all scheduled banks.

If there is no cheque book, arrangements have to be made to pay the beneficiary through debit vouchers.

However, there is no need for opening a new bank account, if a beneficiary already has a bank account.

The list of beneficiaries includes rickshaw pullers, van drivers, day laborers, construction, agricultural, shop and poultry farm workers, and bus, truck and transport helpers.
