CHATTOGRAM: A father attempted suicide after allegedly strangling his two minor daughters at Patiya upazila in the district on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Tuku Barua, 14, and Nishu Barua, 11, daughters of Mukunda Barua of Chakoria upazila in Cox’s Bazar.

Tuku was a student of class-VIII while Nushu of class-IV.

Mukunda used to work at a lighter ship. His wife died after suffering from cancer some four years back.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Borhan Uddin of Patiya police station informed that the girls lived at the residence of their maternal uncle at Bhandargaon in village Kashiaish under the upazila.

Mukunda started living with them since few days back as he lost his job due to the lockdown following coronavirus pandemic, he said.

Neighbours found the two daughters dead and Mukunda lying unconscious beside the duo at their residence in Patiya in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

On information, police recovered the bodies and sent Mukunda to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for medication.

The OC siad Mukunda might have strangled the duo and later tried to commit suicide taking poison.
