Seven killed in lightning strikes

At least seven people were killed in lightning strikes in Maulvibazar, Habiganj and Kishoreganj on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Abdul Matin, 55, Rubel Ahmed, 25, of Maulvibazar, Marafat Ali, 17, Robin Miya, 17, and Askir Miya, 50, of Habiganj and two fishermen Kamrul Hasan 14, and Selim, 28, of Kishoreganj.

In Maulvibazar, Abdul Matin went to work in a vegetable field near his house in Gallasangan Village of Barlekha Upazila when a lightning bolt hit him, killing him on the spot, confirmed local union council member Rashid Ahmad.

Rubel was hit by another strike when he was fishing in a canal in Kazirband area of the same upazila, confirmed Barlekha Police Station Officer-in-charge Md Yasinul Haque.

In Habiganj, the two teenagers -- Marafat and Robin -- were killed and three of their friends were injured as they were struck by lightning while fishing in Azmirganj haor, confirmed Azmirganj Police Station OC Mosharrof Hossain Tarafdar.

In Shayestaganj Upazila of the district, Askir, who also went fishing, was hit by lightning bolt and was severely injured.

Doctors of Habiganj Sadar Hospital pronounced Askir dead after he was taken to hospital, said Shayestaganj Police Station OC Mozammel Haque.

In Kishoreganj, Kamrul Hasan and Selim were killed when the lightning hit them in the morning. They were fishing in the River Meghna in Kuliarchar upazila.   

On Thursday, four people were killed and a child was injured in lightning strikes in Pabna.
