Worrisome leap in deaths, infections

CHATTOGRAM: Two more corona patients died at isolation ward of Chattogram General Hospital on Friday.

With this, a total of 71 corona affected patients died in Chattogram so far.

The deceased are a 53-year-old resident of Panchlaish and a 65-year-old resident of Mogaltuli areas in the city.

Besides, the highest number of 224 patients including a newborn boy was detected as corona positive in a single day at four existing testing centres in Chattogram and Cox's Bazar on Thursday.

Among the patients, 180 are from the city and 44 from different upazilas in the district.

Chattogram General Hospital Senior Consultant Dr Abdur Rob Masum said mother of the newborn was admitted to the hospital with corona.

The baby was born on Sunday last and later he was detected as corona positive, said Dr Rob.

But, conditions of the mother and baby are now stable and they are undergoing treatment at the hospital, he said.

On the other hand, 13 officials and staff of Chattogram Customs House were infected with coronavirus till Thursday.

As a result, panic gripped the officials and employees of the Customs House where a good number of people gather for different purposes related to import and export activities of the country everyday.

The infected persons include revenue officer, assistant revenue officer and a computer operator.

Besides, five owners including former general secretary of C&F Agent Association died with corona in Chattogram while many of this sector were detected as corona positive, said sources.

Chattogram district Civil Surgeon Dr Sheikh Fazle Rabbi said that 457 samples were tested at four labs in Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar, and 224 of them were found as positive on Thursday.

Mentionable, a total of 2,424 persons were detected as corona positive while 71 of them died and 205 recovered in Chattogram district till Friday.

The Bangladesh Institute of Tropical and Infectious Disease (BITID), Chattogram General Hospital, Chattogram Medical College Hospital and Chattogram Field Hospital are providing treatment to the corona patients in Chattogram.

Bangabandhu Memorial Hospital and Imperial Hospital Limited were also declared as corona hospital by the government and the concerned authorities are working to start treatment there.
