Govt to recruit 2,000 more docs, 3,000 medical staff

The government has started a process to recruit 2,000 doctors and 3,000 other medical staff immediately to fight the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has approved the recruitment decision and a process of appointing 3,000 medical technologists, technicians and radiographers has begun,” Md Habibur Rahman Khan, additional secretary (admin) of the Health and Family Welfare Ministry, told the daily sun.

He, however, said the government is also working to recruit another 2,000 doctors to increase the capacity in health sector to ensure proper health care for the people particularly to tackle the corona situation.

Recruitment of physicians, nurses and other medical staff by the government will stand around twelve thousand in very short time this year, after completing fresh recruitment of more five thousand medical staff including physicians as earlier, in the first week of May, the government recruited 2,000 doctors and 5,000 nurses to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) sources said after recruitment of previous 2,000 doctors and 5,000 nurses, they have already joined the work in hospitals to provide services in Covid-19 hospitals across the country.

Dhaka Civil Surgeon's office is providing them with training about the treatment of COVID-19 patients and hygiene protocols to keep them safe.

As many as 1,200 technologists, 1,650 technicians and 150 radiographers will be recruited to treat COVID-19 patients and they will be deployed in hospitals and medical laboratories across the country, the sources added.

According to the DGHS, the government recruited around 6,000 physicians earlier in 2014. Around 4,750 physicians were recruited last year. There are 27,409 doctors among 78,300 medical staff in the country.

And the total number of registered nurses is 56,734, according to Bangladesh Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque announced during his visit to the National Institute of Neurosciences & Hospital (NINH) in January that the government would recruit 5,000 doctors and 15,000 nurses this year in a bid to provide better healthcare.

According to the DGHS, 42,844 people were detected with coronavirus infection in Bangladesh, 582 died and 9,015 patients made recovery across the country including in Dhaka till Friday morning.
