17 die drinking toxic liquor in two dists

At least 17 people died after drinking toxic liquor in Dinajpur and Rangpur districts in the last three days.

Four more people, who fell sick after drinking the liquor, are being treated at Birampur Upazila Health Complex and M Abdur Rahim Medical Collage Hospital. 

In this regard, a homeopathic pharmacy owner Abdul Manan has been arrested from Dinajpur. A case has been filed against him.

The identified deceased are Amrito Roy, 25, son of Taposh Kumar, hailing from Islampara area of the upazila, Sohel Rana, 30, son of Abdul Aziz, Monwar Hossain, 42, son of Abul Hossain and Abdul Alim, 30, Abdul Matin, 27, son of Anwarul Islam, Azizul Islam, 33, son of Tofazzal Hossain, Mahsin Ali, 38, son of Sultan Mahmud, Shafiqul Islam, 45, and his wife Manju Ara, 35 of the upazila. Maniruzzaman Manir, officer-in-charge of Birampur Police Station, said: “On Wednesday, at least nine people died at Birmapur Upazila Complex and M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital drinking toxic liquor.”

In Rangpur at least eight people died drinking the toxic liquor in last three days.

Medical officer of Birampur Helath Complex Dr Solaiman Hossain Mehedi confirmed that “All the victims drunk the toxic liquor.

Quoting victim assistant police super of Birampur circle Mithun Sarkar said, “They bought rectified spirit from Mannan’s homeopathic pharmacy. They confessed that the liquid is being sold many shops in the area.”

However, he did not confirm media that if any toxic substance was mixed with the drink.

It can be confirmed after getting viscera report of the deceased, he also added.
