13 killed as truck turns turtle in Gaibandha

At least 13 homebound people were killed in a tragic road accident at Palashbari in Gaibandha district on Thursday.

Ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, the victims were returning home from Dhaka defying travel ban imposed to contain spread of coronavirus.

The victims boarded a rod-laden truck which turned turtle as its driver lost control over its steering. Five others were also injured in the accident. They are now undergoing treatment at Palashbari Upazila Health Complex.

The people were covered with a plastic tarpaulin to evade the eyes of police, he said. The accident took place when the speedy truck turned turtle on Dhaka-Rangpur highway at Jundho at around 8:00am, leaving 13 passengers dead, he said.

Being informed, police and firefighters reached the spot and recovered the bodies.

The driver and helper of the truck fled the scene, the OC said adding the police were trying to arrest them. Tawhidul Islam, superintendent of police (SP) of Gaibandha, told the daily sun that they are trying to identify the bodies.
