The government on Wednesday appointed some 55 officials of different ranks to oversee the distribution of relief activities among the poor and unemployed people.

The government took the decision following the arrest of people in different parts of the country for misappropriating relief goods amid an ongoing crisis due to the corona outbreak.

The officials, including additional secretaries, joint secretaries and deputy secretaries of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief and the Department of Disaster Management, have been assigned with the task.

The officials will supervise the programme in coordination with deputy commissioners and submit reports to the National Disaster Response Coordination Committee.

Amid fears of the outbreak of the virus, the government extended the general leave to April 14, the first day of the Bengali New Year known as Pahela Boishak.

It also advised the people to stay at homes and banned plying of vehicles, except for emergency services to prevent the transmission of coronavirus during the leave.

Grocery stores and small shops of different areas can remain open until 2:00pm from 6:00 am while all kinds of medicine shops will remain open round the clock.
