CHATTOGRAM: A Union Parishad (UP) chairman of Hathazari upazila under the district allegedly cheated with the poor villagers over government-provided relief material on Monday.

The accused was identified as Nurul Absar, chairman of Mirzapur Union under the upazilas.

The victims have claimed that Chairman Absar at first distributed some relief materials among the villagers only to take away after capturing some photos showing him handing over the items.

Later, the villagers were driven out from the spot by Absar’s brother Mizan and his followers.

Breaking into tears, Hasina, an elderly victim of the incident alleged that they were called by Absar for distributing relief materials.

“After taking some photos of distributing the items, they at first verbally abused us and then drove away from the spot,” she said.

“The chairman has been continuing this type of work for a long time,” she alleged further.

Confirming the matter, Hathazari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ruhul Amin said some people gathered in front of my office on Monday and alleged that they were cheated by the chairman.

“Later, I managed some relief materials for them on behalf of the upazila administration,” he said.

“I asked for written explanation over gathering of such number of people and what happened to them,” said the UNO.
