The Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJKS) on Tuesday urged the leaders of owners-workers associations of roads and shipping sectors to stand beside the nine million transport workers who become jobless due to suspension of public transport services across the country till April 11.
BJKS, a passenger’s welfare platform, made the call in a statement signed by its secretary general Md Mozammel Haque Chowdhury.Earlier, the government suspended movement of public transports on roads across the country from March 26 to April 4 which was later extended till April 11 during the closure to prevent spread of coronavirus.
“There are seven million workers and owners in transport sector and more two million from shipping sector in the country,” BJKS said.
“After the government announcement of general holidays from March 26, the workers became jobless and they are now leading miserable life.”
“Around 98 percent workers work in the transport sector like a day labourer as there is no wage board for workers of the sector. As public transport services have been suspended, there is no other source of income of the transports workers.”
Mozammel Haque Chowdhury urged the owners and leaders of the different transport organisations to stand beside the workers with support to face the situation.
