Country has adequate stock of edible salt

The Industries Ministry said on Tuesday that the country has an adequate amount of edible salt in stock to meet the local demand.

The monthly demand for edible salt in the country is around 75,000 metric tonnes.

Until April 3 this year, the total reserve of salt is over 10.26 lakh metric tonnes, said a press release from the ministry.

It also said there sufficient salt reserves with dealers, wholesalers and retailers of different salt companies across the country.

Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) said in its latest report that the government set a target of 18.50 lakh metric tonnes of salt production in the 2019-20 fiscal year.

Some 10.34 lakh metric tonnes of edible salt has already been produced till April 3.

It also said that there is a shortage of industrial salt due to the impact of the coronavirus outbreak.

In the very outset of the virus outbreak, it also said the government has taken a set of measures for salt production, processing, iodinating and marketing process.
