The government will provide 180 combine harvesters and 137 reaper machines for harvesting Boro paddy at seven haor districts to help ensure smooth food grain supply during the COVID-19 outbreak.
The ministry of agriculture on Monday decided to allocate the machines at a meeting with Agriculture Secretary Md Nasiruddin in the chair.Now, a total of 362 combine harvesters and 1056 reapers are operational at haor areas under the ministry supervision. Besides, a total of 220 combine harvesters and 487 reapers are undergoing maintenance.
The seven districts are: Kishorganj, Netrokhona, Sunamganj, Moulavibazar, Habiganj, Sylhet and B’Baria, said a release.
Agriculture secretary Md Nasiruddin said the ministry allocated the agricultural equipment for an emergency basis to ensure smooth harvesting the paddy in haor areas.
Additional agriculture secretaries Md Arifur Rahman Apu, Md Hasanuzzaman Kollol, Bolai Krishna Hajra, director-general of Department of Agriculture Extension Dr Md Abdul Muyeed and agricultural equipment suppliers were also present at the meeting.
The ministry of agriculture is providing Tk one billion subsidy to farmers for procurement of agricultural equipment. It plans to supply harvesting equipment to rest of the districts by June 2020.
