As part of the on-going anti-rumour crackdown, members of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested a lawyer from the capital’s Badda area Saturday night for spreading rumours on coronavirus and Awami League Secretary General Obaidul Quader.
The arrestee was identified as Abu Bakar Siddiqi."Abu Bakar Siddiqi used to manage a fake Facebook account, where he wrote that Awami League Secretary General and Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader has been infected with coronavirus, and he is under treatment at a hospital,” said CID in their statement.
“He also wrote that many people had committed suicide for failing to pay their monthly installments to banks or NGOs. He also uploaded a negative post with pictures against Bangladesh police,” the statement added.
Assistant Inspector General (AIG-media) of Police Headquarters Sohel Rana said different units of law enforcement agencies including intelligence branches are working with it (spreading rumour) and in the meantime some people were indentified and nabbed as well.
Law enforcers have arrested a good number of such rumourmongers from different parts of the country. They arrested five persons from Rangpur for spreading such rumour.
The arrestees are Ashik Sardar, Akhtaruzzaman, Tanjilur Rahman, Shamir Ghosh and Akibuzzaman.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police commissioner Abdul Alim Mahmud said while briefing the journalists on Saturday. He said they were arrested for spreading the rumour over the coronavirus pandemic.Besides, on Friday night, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) also arrested an alleged hacker from the capital's Jatrabari area for spreading rumours about the coronavirus pandemic.
Six days ago, police also arrested six persons from different areas in Dhaka on charges of spreading rumours and misleading information on the coronavirus outbreak.
They are Awkad Hossain, (53), Ferdous Hasan Titu, (25), Tawhidul Islam, (25), Muslim Uddin, (23), Mofizul Islam, (20), and Farid Hossain, (20).
