A number of garment factories in Ashulia and Savar are operating despite the fact that Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) have already called upon all owners to close their factories amid fears over the spread of novel coronavirus.
According to the intelligence information, the total number of garment factories in Ashulia and Savar is 1181. Of these, 1109 are closed while 72 are open.Of the 72, 12 factories belong to BKMEA, six to BGMEA, two to BTMEA, two to BEPZA and the rest to other owners.
During a visit to the area on Sunday, Mind One Knit Composite Limited, Denitex Limited, AJI Group Limited, Delicate Garments and ABC Bangla Apparel Ltd were spotted doing their regular activities.
At the entrance to Mind One Knit Composite Limited, there was no precautionary notice on coronavirus and inside the factory there were no arrangements for checking body temperature or washing hands.
Besides, the workers in the factory did not maintain social distancing.
Production manager of the factory Habibur Rahman Sohel said some workers are busy making masks.
“We are trying to get the workers to maintain social distance inside the factory. Besides, notice and hand washing facilities will be available within evening.”Adil, admin officer of Denitex Limited, said they are still working as they are supposed to ship some products.
They have already finished and the factory will be shut from today, Adil added.
With the coronavirus is wrecking havocs across the globe, Bangladesh has confirmed 48 cases of infection and 15 of them recovered and five died.
