Mash comes in aid of poor

Bangladesh former ODI skipper Mashrafe Mortaza and his family are providing food assistance to more than one and a half thousand families affected by the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Mashrafe who is also the Member of Parliament from Narail-2 constituency handed over this assistance to the poor and destitute in Narail Sadar and Lohagara Upazila. The fund has been set up with his personal and family’s financial backing.

Tea-sellers, rickshaw-van drivers and hawkers are mostly getting the support in Narail in the first round. More than 300 families are being given a packet which consists of 5 kg rice, 1 kg of lentil, oil, onions and potatoes.

Mashrafe’s maternal uncle Nahidul Islam is overseeing this support programme in Narail. He informed a private news media about the initiative.

“After instructing everyone to stay home all over the country, tea-sellers, hawkers, van drivers, are probably facing the most difficult situation. That’s why we are prioritising them. We have taken this initiative where we have raised the fund from Mashrafe, his grandfather Hashmat Ullah and some members of our family,” said Nahidul Islam.

Mashrafe’s assistance is also on the way to being delivered to the people who needs it. This package is going to relieve the toil of some 1,200 distressed families in Narail and Lohagara.

There will be lentils, potatoes, onions and soap along with 10 kg of rice for each family in each unit. Mashrafe’s uncle said that the distribution process will start within next three to four days after the rice consignments arrive.

Also, Narail’s doctors and nurses have been offered 500 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by Mashrafe. They are expected to receive the invoice on Saturday.

Mashrafe, has formed a ‘QR (Quick Response) Team’ under the supervision of Narail’s Police Superintendent, who will respond immediately to any urgent case regarding coronavirus.

Not only Narail, Mashrafe’s wife, Sumana Haque, is already in the process of providing food assistance to about 200 people in Dhaka. This assistance will be provided to rickshaw-van drivers, tea vendors in Mirpur-Pallabi.
