A man died in police custody at Amtali in Barguna, as his family failed to ‘pay a Tk 300,000 bribe’ to law enforcers.

The victim is named as Shanu Hawlader, 50. The incident took place in Amtali Police Station Thursday morning.

Inspector (investigation) of the police station Manoranjan Mistri and duty officer Arifur Rahman have been suspended over the matter, said district Superintendent of Police (SP) Maruf Hossain.

A three-member committee has been formed to look into the incident, he said.

He said that those who are responsible must face legal action.

But the two police officers denied the allegation terming the incident an act of suicide. Officer-in-charge of the police station Abdul Bashar claimed that Shanu hanged himself from the ceiling fan in the room of Manoranjan at the station.

About the allegation of bribe, he avoided the question.

Shanu was picked up for questioning from his home on Monday in relation to the murder of a certain Ibrahim in 2019, as his step-brother is one of the accused in the case, say police.

Sakib Hossain, son of Shanu Hawlader, said his father was arrested and later the money was demanded for his release.

“As we could not give the money, police tortured our father mercilessly.”

On Wednesday, when he went to the police station to provide food for his father, he was not allowed to see his father, he said, adding that they were informed about the death on Thursday.

Amtali Upazila Vice Chairman Mojibur Rahman and Gulishakhali UP Chairman Nurul Islam alleged that Shanu was killed in police custody.
