With the COVID-19 patients’ number rising each day around the country and the world, more and more people are becoming aware of the disease and of acting more responsibly towards it. During this time of the year, it is not uncommon to experience flu like symptoms. Little did we know that one day these symptoms would cause so much alarm among people! The government has asked everybody in our country to remain calm and to react responsibly. Even when one has tested ‘negative’ with coronavirus, they should still be alert. Avoid social gatherings. Wash your hands well. Refrain from touching your mouth, eyes and nose. Remain in quarantine until the situation gets better. Being in quarantine and under lockdown is a new experience for us all, but it is something one must do for the safety of the country! However, a lockdown doesn’t have to be that bad. Take this as an opportunity to discover new things or to walk down the memory lane. Here are some things you can do to pass this phase of life smoothly:
Be more loving to yourself
A lockdown is surely an unprecedented break from your regular lifestyle. You may no longer be going to your office or university for a few days. Perhaps you are also not in contact with your family members. Take this as an opportunity to take rest. It’s a great time for self-reflection as well. Instead of panicking, immerse yourself in good and positive thoughts. You can spend this time praying, meditating or sleeping. Eat well, drink plenty of water and get ample sleep. In our hectic lifestyle, we are often stressed with deadlines. Now is a great time to remove ourselves away from all those stress factors. Perhaps you could watch a movie, video chat with a friend or watch documentaries. I know plenty of people who have a long list of movies to watch but could never make time for them. Take this opportunity to watch movies or do things you always wanted to! You can also pamper yourself with a home spa! If cooking is your hobby, learn new things online and make those dishes for yourself and your family. Something like this will possibly never happen again, not in decades or centuries. It’s almost like the universe has put a pause button on our ongoing lives. Use this pause for self-reflection. Consider the things necessary to upgrade yourself and your life.
Reading books will help you to temporarily forget all that is going on around you. You will be immersed in a different reality through the author of the book. You will gain a deeper understanding of life through them. The habit of reading books has become quite extinct nowadays. Take this as an opportunity to rekindle this habit. If you are unable to buy books, simply read them online on Kindle.
Start a journal
This can be a superb time to begin journal writing. Of course, it’s true that nothing much is likely to happen in your life during lockdown! But once you begin writing, you will remember many fond memories of people and situations that are bound to make you smile. You can take that journey down the happy memory lane and put them on your diary. Perhaps you can fix a specific time of the day in your quarantine time to write these. You don’t need to buy a fancy new diary for the purpose. An old copy or writing pad should suffice too.
Pursue a new hobby
You can dedicate these idle hours to improving skills or learning new things. Begin learning staff notation if you are interested in music. You can also learn coding or programming from many online platforms that teach for free. Khan Academy is a great place to start with. In the meantime, you can brush your singing skills with karaoke apps such as Smule. If you are more of a painter, bring out the brush and color boxes from your wardrobe! A piece of white cloth, a paper or your wall can be a canvas too. Now is a great time to redirect your life to a different destination. Once the quarantine is over, you will be a new person!
Spend more time with your children
Many parents regret the fact that they cannot give enough time to their kids because of their office and busy schedules. Guess what - now parents are locked inside a house with their kids. Isn’t that a wonderful thing? Play chess, tell stories, paint together or simply watch cartoons with them. Of course, if you are someone who has come from abroad and are currently in isolation, you should refrain yourself from any kind of contact with your children and other family members. In that case, video chat could be an option that brings you both together. You can tell your kids stories of your childhood. In the age of internet, bonding moments such as this was greatly missing.
Take the moment to be thankful
We have many things to be thankful for, but we hardly ever realize it. A roof on top of our heads (that are helping us to be in quarantine) is one such gift. Similarly, there are countless others. Use this time to thank the Creator for all the gifts he has bestowed upon you and your family. Be thankful to one another. Speak to your wife/husband and tell them how grateful you are to have them by your side during this hour of necessity.
Reconnect with old acquaintances through social media
You may run out of movies to watch when you reach the middle days of your quarantine. Or it may be that you are simply bored of watching movies and serials. If you are looking for something new to do, why not trace your old friends and acquaintances over social media? Search over Facebook your first colleague whom you bonded well with. Look for your school friends on Instagram or Facebook. Even if you can find one old friend, you will find that the rest of the quarantine days or, at least few of them, will pass smoothly with both of you discussing about old times and how life has changed over the years.
Unlock new doors
A brief break from the everyday tasks helps us overcome the web of monotony we get habituated with. This release gives us an opportunity to explore new doors and potentials. In ancient times, cavemen in their leisure hours drew sketches on the walls of their caves and ultimately learnt to write using symbols. In other words, the presence of idle hours had worked as a catalyst in their self-development which is why today we are who we are! Had they never found break time between hunting their food and survival, things may have even been different. They sat down; they started thinking and started to explore that led to their collective evolution which is the reason why we now have become so intelligent. Perhaps you could spare a few moments from these days to also unlock a new potential. We are often so preoccupied with our lifestyle that we hardly get that break to sit and ponder. But quarantine could be nature’s gift to you to unlock something new and turn your life around.
