Ban on using plastic, metal pin, newspaper

Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) imposed a ban on use of staple or any metal in food packet or box, one time plastic cup for tea or coffee and polythene or newspaper in food packaging.  

National food safety regulatory agency BFSA on Tuesday issued a circular according to the Food Safety (Food Contact Material) Regulations, 2019. 

Violation of the regulation is punishable offense under the Food Safety Act, 2013. He or she would be fined maximum Tk 20 lakh, in default, has to serve 5 years in imprisonment for violating the regulation.

They also directed the food contact material producers, businessman, food packaging firms, food traders and others concerned to follow the regulation.

The BFSA directed to use food grade raw material to make food contact material and packaging, not to use metal like pin, stapler and safety pin.

Use of lower grade and recycled polythene, newspaper and written paper in food packaging or any distribution has also been banned.
